Implementing Social-Emotional Learning for Equity and Inclusion

Assessment Rubric (SEL)

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is assessed through ongoing observation, reflection, and application, rather than traditional testing. Because SEL focuses on the development of skills, attitudes, and behaviors, assessment emphasizes students’ growth over time, their participation in learning experiences, and their ability to apply skills in real-life contexts.

Assessment is embedded within daily classroom practices and includes:

  • teacher observations during activities and interactions
  • student self-reflections and journals
  • peer feedback and collaborative tasks
  • informal check-ins and discussions

This approach ensures that assessment remains authentic, formative, and responsive to students’ individual development.

SEL Assessment Rubric

Competency Emerging Developing Proficient Extending
Self-Awareness Identifies basic emotions with support Recognizes and names emotions independently Explains emotions and connects them to actions Reflects deeply on identity, emotions, and personal growth
Self-Management Requires support to regulate emotions and behavior Uses simple strategies (e.g., breathing) with reminders Independently manages emotions and stays focused Applies regulation strategies across contexts and supports others
Social Awareness Shows limited understanding of others’ perspectives Demonstrates empathy in familiar situations Considers diverse perspectives and responds respectfully Advocates for others and demonstrates strong empathy in complex situations
Relationship Skills Struggles to collaborate or communicate effectively Participates in group work with support Communicates clearly and collaborates effectively Leads group interactions and resolves conflicts constructively
Responsible Decision-Making Requires guidance to make appropriate choices Makes simple decisions with some awareness of consequences Makes responsible and thoughtful decisions independently Evaluates complex situations and makes ethical, informed choices

How This Rubric is Used in Practice

  • Student reflection: Students use the rubric to assess their own growth and set goals
  • Teacher feedback: Educators provide descriptive feedback based on observed behaviors and participation
  • Ongoing development: Progress is tracked over time rather than measured in isolated moments

Connection to SEL and Equity

This assessment approach recognizes that students develop SEL skills at different rates and in different ways. By focusing on growth rather than comparison, the rubric supports a more equitable and inclusive approach to assessment, where all students are valued for their progress and effort.

Overall Purpose

The SEL assessment rubric supports the development of learners who are not only academically capable but also self-aware, socially responsible, and able to apply their skills in meaningful and real-world contexts.
